What: City on the Hill Youth Leadership Conference
When: July 24-29, 2018
Where: Rocklin and Sacramento
The annual City on the Hill Youth Leadership Conference is a great opportunity for California high school students to learn about state government.
City on the Hill is a week-long summer camp sponsored and operated by Capitol Resource Institute, a Sacramento-based non-profit whose mission is to educate and strengthen families by working to influence public policy. CRI’s Executive Director Karen England will be SVARW’s guest speaker at the May 23 meeting.
During the leadership conference, students engage in hands on learning by becoming mock legislators. Students must argue for and against bills currently being considered by the California legislature. At the end of the week students spend a day on the actual floor of the California senate and assembly, enabling them to get a better feel for what it is like to be a legislator. This process enables students to thoroughly learn the ins and outs of state government.
Rachel Bodine, one of last year’s participants described her experience:
“I arrived on the first day of City on the Hill a little bit scared. I wanted to be there, but I was nervous about it. I left the camp, five days later, saddened COTH was coming to an end. During the six days of City on the Hill, I learned how to “play the game of politics” by experiencing it. I made lots of friends who are just as excited as I am to come back for yet another year.”
All high school students and their parents are encouraged to explore this great opportunity to help shape tomorrow’s leaders.
This year SVARW will be sponsoring two students ($400 scholarships each) to this summer’s conference in Rocklin. To be eligible, students must submit an essay of not more than 500 words on the topic:
There NOT ought to be a law! Pick one law to repeal, explain it, and why it should be repealed. Also include a brief statement (100 words or fewer) on why you would like to attend City on the Hill.
Essays should be mailed to Scholarship Entry, c/o SVARW, PO Box 3194, Saratoga, CA 95070, postmarked on or before April 30. The two winners will be notified in mid-May. All essays should include the teen’s name, address, phone number and email address. Scholarships do not include travel to and from Rocklin and Sacramento. Winners will need to submit an application to the City on The Hill Youth Conference and fulfill all requirements to attend.
