LIBERTY CELEBRATION --May 12, 2012

Featuring Arizona Sheriff Richard Mack

Arizona Sheriff Richard Mack at Liberty Celebration on May 12, 2012

SVARW held its annual Liberty Celebration at the Elk’s Lodge in Los Gatos May 12 with Sheriff Richard Mack as the keynote speaker. Also speaking was Karen Meredith, President of the Northern California chapter of American Gold Star Mothers (AGSM.)

Sheriff Mack spoke on “Local Solutions for National Problems.” In a very interesting presentation, he described how he and six other sheriffs challenged the constitutionality of the controversial Brady Bill and won in a 5-4 US Supreme Court decision.

Sheriff Mack is a self-described “constitutional conservative” with a long history of supporting causes such as states’ rights, individual rights, and Second Amendment rights. His is an ongoing quest for defending and restoring liberty.

Also, as part of the program, SVARW honored American Gold Star Mothers, a national group of mothers whose sons and daughters died while serving our country. Karen Meredith accepted the award on behalf of American Gold Star Mothers and shared with us her own personal story as well as an overview of AGSM.

After his presentation, Sheriff Mack hosted a lively Q&A session.

About Sheriff Richard Mack

He was sheriff of Graham County Arizona for two terms until 1997. He was named Elected Official of the Year by the Arizona-New Mexico Coalition of Counties in 1994, received the NRA Law Officer of the Year, inducted into the NRA Hall of Fame, 1995 Cicero Award, Samuel Adams Leadership Award from the Local Sovereignty Coalition, and Gun Owners of America Defender of the Second Amendment Award.

During his tenure, federal officers informed the sheriffs of the state that they would be required to enforce the so-called "Brady Bill" and run background checks at their expense under the law. In 1994, Mack and six other sheriffs from across the country, challenged the constitutionality of the Brady Bill and ultimately, fought it all the way to the United States Supreme Court, where they won a monumental decision for freedom.

On June 27, 1997, the Supreme Court ruled in Printz/Mack vs. USA that the Brady Bill was unconstitutional thus restoring the 10th Amendment:

“The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution…are reserved to the States respectively or to the people.”

Today, Sheriff Mack is a tireless crusader for the Bill of Rights.
